New Rith 2014 route
A BASQUE-inspired 1000km relay race to promote the Irish language will get underway in Baile Bhuirne next March. The route for Rith 2014 will be revealed at Oireachtas na Samhna in the Brehon Hotel in Killarney this Saturday, and the 1000 km route is set to start from Baile Bhuirne and finish in Belfast.
The event is a relay-race run for the Irish language that will begin in Baile Bhuirne on March 7 next, and involves the carrying of a special hand-carved baton, and a hidden message within, by different groups over each kilometre throughout the nine day run. The relay, which aims to raise money to create a fund for the promotion of the Irish language, finish with a festival in the heart of Belfast on the March 15.
“We are excited about the new route for Rith 2014,” Cormac Ó Feinneadha, event manager of Rith 2014 said. “This year is different as we will be running through the night in Dublin. Rith has grown and grown since the festival began in 2010. When the new route is revealed different groups will get a chance to buy a kilometre and register with this enjoyable event at www.rith.ie.”
Rith 2014 is the third run organised since 2010 and the concept was inspired by the Basque County, where a similar language festival, the “Korrika” is celebrated since the 1980s and in which more than 600,000 people participate.
